The Life Changing Benefits of CBD
Do you recall a time when you had a feeling in your gut that a shift was about to happen? A feeling that something BIG was going to occur that would impact your life forever but in that moment, you did not know the WHAT or the HOW?
For me that was September 2019. My beloved dog and companion, Bernard was struggling with the effects of a heart -attack and I was healing from appendectomy surgery. In the midst of these personal challenges, I was creating and preparing for a large workshop focused on women’s health and the impact of “well-being” on desire and pleasure. I had worked with and interviewed countless women on the effects of stress, anxiety, hormonal changes, and pain and what it did or did not do for them in the bedroom.
Coincidently, as I navigated through the worry about my dog, the pain and tiredness I felt because of surgery and the overwhelm of preparing for a big workshop, my sexual desire took a nosedive.
WHOA! In the past, sex, and sexual pleasure, had always helped me get through these challenging times by energizing me and leaving me feeling more content. But, this time, sex left the building per say and took a hiatus.
Now, some of you may be thinking, “no big deal, that happens”. But let me tell you – for someone that has spent the majority of their adult years experimenting with, studying and coaching and supporting others on sexual pleasure, this was not only a blow to my psyche but it also caused me some panic that I was losing an essential part of me.
And then, just like that, I was given a sign…
During a dog “exchange” with my husband’s ex-wife and her medical professional boyfriend (it’s complicated) we were given a tincture of CBD, along with the instructions on how to administer it to Bernard.
At the time, I was a CBD virgin and although I have always gravitated to “edgy” things, I was clueless as to what CBD was and its benefits. Nor did I know that it was not psychoactive like THC. Nevertheless, I consistently gave Bernard CBD, and I witnessed his recovery and the return of his spunk. This got me thinking… could CBD help me too?
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is the second-most-prominent compound of the cannabis plant after THC, but without the psychoactive effects.
Although we have a long way to go in mastering the science of CBD and unlocking its full medicinal potential, we do have a working understanding of how CBD molecules interact with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) to produce a variety of therapeutic benefits.
Researchers have identified the ECS presence throughout the entire body, maintaining an internal regulatory balance, or homeostasis, in several bodily functions. The ECS is present on immune cells in the bloodstream, on virtually every brain cell, across the spinal cord, throughout the cardiovascular system, and on our skin.
The ECS is made up of three main components: endocannabinoids (endogenous cannabinoids, or cannabinoids native to the body), receptors that endocannabinoids bind to, and enzymes that break them down to elicit a bodily response. The two most studied cannabinoid receptors within the body are called CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are mostly found in the central nervous system where they regulate brain function. CB2 receptors are most prominent on immune cells throughout the bloodstream. Phytocannabinoids, or cannabinoids from the cannabis plant, can elicit therapeutic responses in the body by binding to these receptors.
The endocannabinoid system allows CBD to help treat a wide range of symptoms. CBD binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors. It also interacts with the body through several other biological pathways and is thought to produce therapeutic effects by activating multiple pathways at once.
People who are taking CBD have reported a great number of benefits in treating several symptoms including ailments that have, until recently, been treatable only with prescription drugs or synthetic cannabinoids. Cancer patients suffering from pain and nausea from chemotherapy, Alzheimer’s, seizures caused by Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Anxiety, and Depression are just a few of the notable ones. Other health benefits that CBD has been known to treat are:
Acne
Anorexia
Anxiety
Stress
Gut Health
Sleep Disturbances
Chronic pain
Glaucoma
High blood pressure
Insomnia
Muscle spasms
Arousal
It has been a year since I have been taking CBD and it has changed my life. Not only am I able to handle stress much more efficiently, but I also sleep better, have more energy, and no longer get huge cyclic hormonal shifts. AND guess what? I am happy to share that sex and pleasure is once again a healthy component of my life!
