Relationship Survival Skills For COVID and beyond
Are you struggling with how to navigate desire, intimacy and sex during these times?
It starts with you – deep diving into your desires, needs and boundaries; determining what is most important to you and your body and how you like to give and receive.
Creating distance despite cocooning – taking a bath; spending time with yourself in a separate room; honoring self time for each of you
If you are apart – connecting through virtual platforms
Play and imagination - fantasy, humour and creativity – a necessary survival skill. Play is not frivolous - it enhances brain structure and function which allow us to pursue goals and ignore distractions. The mutual joy and shared communication and attunement (harmonious serve and return interactions) that couples can experience during play regulate the body’s stress response. This is essential for coping.
Gratitude and respect for one another - focus on the things that your partner does rather than what he/she does not do. Take inventory of how you acknowledge each other’s effort. Appreciate each other privately and publicly. Dance, sing, explore, imagine!
Bids for affection – kiss a lot, hold hands, give each other a massage, cook together
Communication - practice deep listening and speak from the “I” perspective; agree on mutual action plans
Practice a healthy lifestyle - Exercise, nutrition, adequate sleep and grounding exercises such as meditation and journaling
